General notes on
MOULD RELEASE
Some mould materials such as
polythene, polypropylene and similar are self releasing and need no
pre-treatment before using.
Flexible moulds in latex, silicone or
Vinamold are self releasing also but sometimes (when unfilled clear
casting resin is used) small surface areas may remain slightly tacky with
a slight roughness. This apparently is due to resin shrinkage resulting in
a sudden detachment at a critical moment when resin cure is inhibited by
air contact.
The remedy is either coat thickly the
casting with wax polish or immerse in a light oil (baby oil) for 72 hours
then buff/polish up.
Glass when used as a mould needs to
be either polished up (non-silicone wax) or liquid release agent applied
to form a barrier. The latter option is either brushed, sprayed or sponged
on, ensure complete coverage then allow to evaporate. A very thin blue
film is left and following casting can be either peeled off or dissolved
with water.
